Fun in the Sun! – Suncare Tips for Summer

The weather’s getting warmer and the days are getting longer!

However, as we start to enjoy the sun, it can be easy to forget how vulnerable our skin is to its harmful rays.

We all know how bad UV rays can be for your skin. Premature ageing and medical skin conditions are the major concerns associated with UV damage but what if there were steps you could take now to keep these at bay?

Well that’s where we’ve stepped in

Here are a few top tips for protecting your skin this Summer:

  • Wear sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays, with at least an SPF of 30. Sunscreen should be worn all year round to protect the skin, not just in the summer!
  • Reapply your sunscreen regularly throughout the day and more if you’re swimming or sweating. (Top tip: Use a physical sunscreen rather than a chemical sunscreen as it will work straight away)
  • Keep your eyes protected with sunglasses that offer total UV protection.
  • Keep out of the sun during the hottest hours of the day, ie. 10am to 2pm.
  • Give your face and hair extra protection from the rays by wearing a wide brimmed hat.
  • Keep an eye on any changes to your skin, ie. Moles and seek medical help if you find anything concerning.
  • Get your glow elsewhere! There’s no need to damage your skin for the sake of a flawless tan. Dedicate a night (or two!) a week to tanning and you’ll maintain a golden glow all Summer.

Get Party Ready!

Contrary to the belief, tanning is not just for the summer! These days, everyone strives for an all year round golden glow thats long lasting and streak free. During this time of year, parties are in full swing and weekends mark the time of all the pre party preparation nightmares, starting with the numerous struggles of fake tan. At Sunescape we love to make our tan’s super quick and easy to use so in this post we are going to share our secret tips and tricks on how to get ‘party ready’ just like Kendall Jenner and you’ll be sure to turn heads!

14719064_366356880372204_7917034420693893120_n1. Preparation

Preparing for your tan is the most essential step in achieving the best tan possible. Hydration is one of the key elements in getting good results. Hydrated skin holds a much better tan so ensure you shave, exfoliate and moisturise prior, to determine the most even application.

2. Application

When applying your tan, be sure to apply it through an effective method of application. Sunescape recommends the tanning application mitt which is available to purchase on our website. It’s velvet texture glides gently across the skin, making tanning even easier!

3. Drying Time

Sunescape Self Tan has a drying time of 2 hours so be sure to allow time for this. After the allocated time, you are able to shower off the guide colour whilst your tan continues to develop.

4. Chose your Outfit

Your outfit is the ultimate game changer when preparing for a night out, therefore planning is essential. Plan your outfit around your make up or vise vera. However, at Sunescape we believe you can never go wrong with a LBD.

5. Get Makeup Inspiration

Your make up can essentially change the way you look so experiment with complimentary looks in relation to your complexion, hair colour and eye colour. Look at your favourite celebrities, this can help. Our favourite for this season is a golden brown smokey eye to compliment your beautiful Sunescape tan.

Congratulations you are now Party Ready! Have Fun!

How to Prolong Your Faux Golden Glow

Sometimes a tan just doesn’t stay put! Whether you spray tan or self tan, there are certain factors that can cause your tan to fade faster than it should. Want to keep your golden bronze for as long as possible? Here are our tips on proper tan maintenance.

1. Avoid salt water and chlorine. You may want to dive in as soon as your tan sets, but exfoliating substances and harsh chemicals will strip your colour. If you really want to make your tan last longer, stick to lounging poolside. Besides, it’s easier to show off your glow that way!

2. Use a tan extender. One of the best ways to prolong your tan is to apply a gradual tanner every few days to continue building on the pigmentation. Sunescape’s Hydrating Gradual Tan Extender contains nourishing oils and antioxidants from fruit extracts to soften skin and help preserve the your tan.

3. Keep your skin moisturised. Dry skin won’t hold a tan well, so make sure to apply a rich body butter daily. The Sunescape Hydrating Body Butter is enriched with Vitamin E, buriti oil, and mango extract to promote a longer-lasting tan through intense hydration. The tropical scent will have you hooked!

4. Stay away from harsh bath or shower products. Just as it’s important to use sulfate-free shampoo to preserve a new hair colour, it’s best to use gentle body wash to maintain the vibrancy of your tan. The Sunescape Hydrating Shower Gel is pH balanced and free of soap, sulfates, and parabens, making it the perfect body wash to use after a spray tan.

5. Dial back on the intense workouts. Perspiration is a top perpetrator of a fading tan, so if you’re keen on keeping your tan for a special event, skip the gym this once. Dead set on going for a run? Make sure to change out of your sweaty clothing and shower as soon as you get home, and don’t skimp on the Gradual Tan Extender!

Have you been your own worst culprit when it comes to keeping your tan? We’ve all been there! Now that you know how to make your spray tan last, you’ll be glowing all summer long.

Earlier this year, our Hydrating Gradual Tan Extender won a Health & Fitness magazine 2015 award for Best Gradual Tan. The Self-Tan Mousse was also awarded Best Self Tan in the Pop Sugar (Australia) 2014 awards.

10 common tanning mistakes to beware of!

Leg exfoliating

No matter how reliable your tanning solution may be, even the best products can only work their magic if you exercise proper care in the preparation, application and maintenance of your tan. Whether you’re spray tanning a client, or self-tanning in the comfort of your own home, it’s crucial to watch out for these common tanning mistakes in order to achieve the smoothest long-lasting glow.

1. Forgetting to exfoliate: The golden rule of spray tanning is to exfoliate as well as possible before your tan to get rid of any dead skins cells. Bring on the loofahs and salt scrubs!

2. Hairy legs! Even if you exfoliate well, it’ll be difficult to achieve an even tan on stubbly legs. Take extra time to shave your legs before heading to the salon.

3. Neglecting to pull all your hair back: To avoid missing spots around the neck, pull your hair back with an elastic band and pin flyways in place before securing a shower cap. Voila!

4. Panda eyes: Dark circles can be emphasised by a deep tan, so apply a moisturiser to your eye area to dilute the effect. We promise people will think you’ve had your beauty sleep.

5. Swimming too soon or too often: Exposure to chlorine and salt water will quickly fade a spray tan, and even more while the tan is still developing. Make sure to wait at least six hours before making a splash.

6. Working up a sweat before the tan has set: If you want to look tanned for a night of dancing or need to log hours at the gym that day, make sure to apply your tan at least a few hours before your activity, if not the night before, to avoid unsightly streaking.

7. Missing or overdoing elbows and knees. These places are not only easy to overlook, but tend to be particularly dry. Give these areas extra attention when exfoliating, and take care when applying the solution to these spots- don’t overdo it!

8. Hands and feet look unnaturally dark: This can look artificial and be a dead giveaway of your fake tan so only apply a light coat to these areas but don’t miss out on them completely. To avoid looking like you have dirty hands and feet, it’s also a good idea to moisturise the bottom of your feet/toes and the palm of your hands before tanning.

9. Overdoing your face: A heavily bronzed or streaky face will draw too much (unwanted) attention to your spray tan, so you may want to opt for a lighter shade of solution or do one very light coat. If you’re using a tanning mousse, apply it in small amounts, as if you’re using moisturiser.

10. Your tan fades fast and patchy:As well as exfoliating before your spray tan, you need to moisturise your entire body on a daily basis afterwards to extend the lifespan of your colour and to avoid patchiness. A gradual tanner is perfect way to moisturise and extend the life of your tan before your next tanning session.

Avoid these common mistakes the next time you prepare for a spray tan, and we’re certain you’ll end up with a truly flawless tan.
